What is bruxism?
Bruxism is the name for involuntary clenching of the jaws, sometimes with side-to-side movements. This reflex happens when the contraction mechanisms used for chewing are triggered without being called on. Bruxism can occur while awake or asleep. It is most damaging during sleep, since it is then completely unconscious and impossible to stop. Night-time clenching or grinding can therefore have several consequences, which are also signs that you suffer from the problem.
The symptoms of bruxism

- Dentin hypersensitivity (sensitivity to hot or cold) caused by thinning enamel or receding gums.
- Breakdown of the structure of some teeth, to the point where they need to be restored with a crown.
- Enamel wear visible during routine exams.
- Restorations (fillings, inlays, crowns) that are abnormally damaged.
- Unrestful sleep leading to chronic fatigue.
- Headaches, felt mostly in the morning but sometimes lasting through the day.
- Tooth and facial pain (jaw, temples, neck), frequent, but felt mainly on waking.
- Jaw pain caused by temporomandibular joint disorders.
- A grinding noise that can disturb your partner’s sleep.
How can bruxism be controlled?

First, it is very hard for researchers to determine the exact causes of bruxism. However, the link between stress and anxiety and this jaw-clenching reflex is clearly established. This means it is nearly impossible to eliminate, but you can try to control its intensity and how it shows up. To do so, we recommend limiting sources of stress (or working on ways to manage it) and avoiding alcohol and tobacco before bed to promote sleep. Wearing an occlusal splint, a custom-made protective appliance, reduces the force and frequency of bruxism episodes while protecting the structures of the mouth from its effects.
