Partial and complete dentures

Although it affects fewer people than it once did, many people are missing all or some of their teeth, or will be over time. This can be embarrassing, and it also affects function and oral and general health. To address this, the team at Centre Dentaire Ethier & Nadeau in Saint-Eustache offers a simple solution: partial and complete dentures.

Losing several teeth: many possible causes

Losing several teeth is increasingly rare, but it still happens, for various reasons. It is often the result of bad habits, inconsistent oral hygiene and inadequate dental follow-up, which can lead to several diseases and make them worse. If, as with periodontitis, this damages the foundations of the teeth, they may fall out (or have to be removed). Age can also explain complete or partial tooth loss: not only do wear and aging weaken the structures that hold the teeth, but older people may have received inappropriate treatment in the past. For a long time, it was common practice to extract diseased teeth to treat their problems.

Removable dentures as a solution

Removable dentures as a solution

Dentures are an ideal solution to replace a large number of teeth, or even all the teeth of a jaw. They consist of artificial teeth set in imitation gums, handmade by a dentist or denturologist. They help the mouth do its job. When some or all of the teeth are missing, it is hard to eat properly, since chewing is compromised. The face also looks older, especially as the muscles sag because the teeth no longer support them properly. A complete or partial denture, as needed, counters these problems.

How partial and complete dentures differ

How partial and complete dentures differ

  • The partial denture: It replaces a series of missing teeth by resting on the remaining teeth. Along with the imitation teeth and gums, it has a metal framework with clasps that hold it in place on the remaining natural teeth.
  • The complete denture: It replaces all the teeth of a jaw. Since it has no anchors or clasps, it simply rests on the gum, where it stays in place thanks to a good fit and suction. Special products can also be used for this.
