Dental exam

Dentists are health professionals whose role is to look after the good health of every part of the mouth (teeth, soft tissues, joints, etc.). To do so, they prevent, screen for, diagnose and treat the diseases, conditions and deficiencies that affect them. A complete, thorough dental exam is the best starting point for the care provided by your dentists at Centre Dentaire Ethier & Nadeau in Saint-Eustache.

What is a dental exam for?

The dental exam is an important part of the routine visit, which also includes a cleaning. In some cases, such as when you first join a new dental clinic, it can also be done at a separate appointment. During the dental exam, the dentist checks the condition of the structures of the mouth and looks for anomalies or signs of disease. Digital X-rays and the intraoral camera give a more precise overall view of the mouth and its parts. The dentist can then make clear diagnoses (nature of the disease or condition, cause of the symptoms, how far the condition has progressed, etc.) and determine the right treatment plan.

What the dental exam includes

What the dental exam includes

  • An exam of the teeth: Every tooth surface is carefully checked for anomalies (stains, signs of wear, lesions, etc.). Particular attention is of course paid to tooth decay.
  • An assessment of the gums: We look for signs of infection (gingivitis and periodontitis) and measure the degree of gum inflammation, if any.
  • An oral cancer screening: The dentist inspects the mucous membranes and soft tissues for suspicious lesions.
  • A check of the condition of restorations (fillings, inlays, crowns) and dentures.
  • An assessment of the temporomandibular joints: These can be affected by disorders with many causes and consequences.
  • Dental X-rays and the intraoral camera: These technologies provide a more detailed view of all the structures of the mouth and face.

The dental exam: the cornerstone of good oral health follow-up

When done at regular intervals, dental exams have preventive benefits: they let us quickly control problems and their causes before they get worse and require more extensive solutions. The first exam at a new clinic is especially important: your dentist can determine your needs and the type of follow-up required. Your treatment team will then set the ideal frequency for your dental exams (every six to twelve months, on average) based on the condition of your mouth, your general health and your habits (hygiene, diet, smoking, etc.).

The dental exam: a chance to talk with your treatment team

Along with the dental exam and the cleaning that goes with it, routine visits are also a chance to have a frank discussion with your dentist and your dental hygienist. You can ask all your questions about the diagnoses and treatments proposed, and also tell them about any changes in your health. Finally, we will review your hygiene routine and lifestyle habits to find ways to improve them!
