What is a fixed bridge for?
A fixed bridge is a tooth replacement solution designed to fill a gap between two healthy teeth. It replaces missing teeth and so counters the various consequences of gaps in the teeth. Gaps make the smile look neglected and older, and they make chewing and pronouncing certain sounds more difficult. They also increase the risk of irritation, bacterial infiltration and shifting roots (of the neighbouring and opposing teeth).
The bridge counters these consequences while giving the smile back a good appearance and good function. It is made in one piece from a block of natural-coloured dental zirconia, which makes it both attractive and strong. It has two main parts: the pontic and the abutments.
The bridge: a replacement in two parts

- The pontic: This central part of the fixed bridge is the replacement tooth. It is flanked by the abutments, which hold it in place and let it do its job.
- The abutments: These are the supporting teeth of the bridge, on either side of the gap, onto which the crowns attached to the pontic are fixed.
A two-step procedure

A fixed bridge is a fairly simple way to replace a missing tooth, but it (usually) takes two appointments.
- At the first appointment: The dentist first makes sure the abutment teeth and surrounding tissues are healthy. Local anesthesia is given, then the teeth are shaped the same way they would be for crowns. Impressions are taken and a temporary bridge is placed to protect the surrounding structures between the two visits.
- At the second appointment: Your dentist removes the temporary bridge, then adjusts the dental bridge before cementing it onto the abutment teeth. This is done under local anesthesia.
A simple solution that prevents many problems

As mentioned above, a dental bridge prevents several problems linked to tooth loss. It is a fairly accessible solution that lets you get back to your usual habits. The dental zirconia it is made of makes it both strong and attractive; the fixed bridge blends in with the natural teeth. And, with proper care, it can stay in place for many years!
