Why flossing matters: a simple habit with big benefits

Brushing is part of our daily routine, but on its own it is not enough to ensure optimal oral health. To complete brushing, a discreet but essential tool is often neglected: dental floss. Many people think of it only for removing a piece of food stuck between their teeth, but its role is actually much more important. That is why the team at Centre Dentaire Ethier & Nadeau prepared this article on the subject.

What is dental floss for?

Floss is not just for avoiding an embarrassing smile after a meal. Its main role is to clean the spaces between the teeth and under the gum line, which toothbrush bristles cannot properly reach.

It is in these small spaces that plaque builds up most easily. Plaque is made up of bacteria that, if not removed, can cause:

  • Cavities between the teeth;
  • Gum inflammation (gingivitis);
  • And, over time, periodontal disease.

Flossing every day therefore prevents problems that are not immediately visible but can seriously harm oral health over the years.

The right way to floss

Many people find it hard to make flossing part of their routine because they find it uncomfortable or are not sure how to do it. Yet the technique is simple once you master it:

  • Use about 40 cm of floss and wind each end around your middle fingers, keeping a few centimetres taut between your thumbs and index fingers.
  • Gently slide the floss between two teeth, without forcing, so you don’t hurt the gum.
  • Curve the floss into a small “C” around the tooth and move it up and down to clean the surface.
  • Repeat on the other side of the gap, since every contact between two teeth has two surfaces to clean.
  • Move on to the next gap using a clean section of floss.

It is normal to feel slight sensitivity or see a little bleeding at first. These signs usually disappear after a few days, as the gums get healthier. If the bleeding persists, see your dental team, since it is a sign that gingivitis is setting in.

Five good reasons to floss every day

  • Preventing cavities between the teeth: these cavities, often invisible to the naked eye, tend to appear in areas only floss can reach.
  • Avoiding gum disease: daily flossing reduces the risk of gingivitis and, over time, periodontitis, a more serious infection that can lead to irreversible destruction of the tissues supporting the teeth.
  • Keeping your breath fresh: plaque and debris stuck between the teeth are breeding grounds for bacteria that give off an unpleasant smell as they multiply.
  • Getting more out of dental visits: good cleaning between the teeth makes professional cleanings quicker and more comfortable.
  • Protecting your general health: research shows a link between gum health and certain systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and dementia. Caring for your gums with floss therefore contributes to your overall health.

A small habit that changes everything

Flossing takes just a few minutes a day, but its benefits are considerable. Making this simple habit part of your routine, ideally in the evening before brushing, can make a big difference in the long run.

At Centre Dentaire Ethier & Nadeau, our team encourages every patient to adopt this habit. At your appointments, our dental hygienists can show you the ideal technique and advise you on the types of floss or accessories suited to your situation.

Taking care of your smile starts with small daily habits, and flossing is undoubtedly one of the most important!
